I'm Scott McCarty, a **Global Senior Principal Product Manager at Red Hat** for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, arguably the largest open source software business in the world. My focus areas include cloud, containers, workload expansion, and automation, with current emphasis on planning and execution of RHEL 10 and RHEL 11. Working closely with customers, partners, engineering teams, sales, marketing, other product teams, and even in the community, I combine personal experience with customer and partner feedback to enhance and tailor strategic capabilities in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
I'm a social media start-up veteran, an e-commerce old timer, and a weathered government research technologist, with experience across a variety of organizations, from seven person startups to 25,000 employee technology companies. This has culminated in a unique perspective on open source software development, delivery, and maintenance. I'm also a Red Hat Certified Architect (2013) and Pragmatic Certified Product Manager (2020).
## Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Side Projects
My primary focus is planning and execution for **RHEL 10 and RHEL 11** at Red Hat. On the side, I've been building MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers for AI assistants, available on [GitHub/crunchtools](https://github.com/crunchtools). I'm also working on a couple of passion projects: [rootsofthevalley.org](https://rootsofthevalley.org) and [acquacotta.crunchtools.com](https://acquacotta.crunchtools.com).
## 2013-2020: Containers and Cloud Native
My focus shifted to containers and all things Cloud Native. As the product manager for Podman and Red Hat Universal Base Image, I spoke at DockerCon, LinuxCon, ContainerCon, and Red Hat Summit on topics ranging from container security to Linux container internals. But I still try to keep the technical edge – while also bringing a more mature understanding of what is and isn't valuable, especially for people that are in the trenches building and [maintaining](https://aeon.co/essays/innovation-is-overvalued-maintenance-often-matters-more) things.
## 2010: Crunchtools Beginnings
Over the years, crunchtools.com has evolved. Back in 2010 when I first started publishing, this site was a collecting point for all of my work around Web Operations and Systems Administration. From serving Ecards at [American Greeting Interactive](https://www.americangreetings.com/) (AGI) – where I had 35 Python programmers and 1000 Linux web servers, and where I [picked up the moniker fatherlinux](https://crunchtools.com/how-i-got-the-name-fatherlinux/) – to [EYEMG](http://www.eyemg.com/) where we did everything from server hosting to complex, web-based supply chain software which interacted with mainframes, I have done a lot of technical work. From troubleshooting Russians hacking our front doors (routers) to writing and publishing complex open source BGP checks, to how teams should build/document things to best practices in log analysis – it's all here somewhere.

## Thanks
I would like to thank my employer Red Hat ([www.redhat.com](https://www.redhat.com)) for encouraging me to contribute open source software and knowledge to this site. Red Hat is a very open company which encourages all of its employees to contribute in their local communities and online.
I would like to thank [Sandro "red" Mathys](http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Red#Sandro_.22red.22_Mathys) for helping me get petit into Fedora 13. This is the first package I have ever had in a Linux distribution and it is really exciting.
I would like to thank the [Akron Linux Users Group](http://groups.google.com/group/akronlug) for allowing me to present my topics which are only sometimes loosely related to Linux directly and often focus more on Web Operations or Systems Administration topics.
I would like to thank my good friends at EYEMG LLC ([www.eyemg.com](https://www.eyemg.com)) for hosting my lab. This lab provides me with the infrastructure I need to continue contributing to petit and my other projects.
Finally, I would like to thank my good friend Chad Remesch at [Blue Frog Gaming](http://bluefroggaming.com/) for challenging me back in 1998. Without his grief, I wouldn't have learned about Linux and the magic of Open Source.
