Recap of Container Talks at DevConf US

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the first ever DevConf US 2018, which is the 1st annual, free, Red Hat sponsored technology conference for community project and professional contributors to Free and Open Source technologies at the Boston University in the historic city of Boston, USA.

This was a technical conference in its truest sense, with a lot very technical talks. One of the main tracks was “Containers and orchestration” and there was no shortage of great talks. Here, I am going to highlight a few which I attended or presented.

Combined, these talks provide insight into where Red Hat is investing, experimenting and where individuals are excited to contribute.

First, Container Security: So Many Options, Use Them All! highlighted many of the new security features in Podman, Buildah and Skopeo by Urvashi Mohnani (@umohnani8) and Sally O’Malley (@somalley108):

Second, Building Container Images: Hard and Easy Ways explains how to build a container images from scratch, I mean FROM SCRATCH, like using the cp command, and other command line utilities, by Nalin Dahyabhai (@atnalind):

Third, State of Linux Container Technologies gave a good overview of the container tools landscape as well as some good history. Also, just a very entertaining and fun talk by Dan Walsh (@rhatdan):

Forth, Container Linux and RHEL; the road ahead is a great overview of how Container Linux and Atomic Host are merging to become Fedora CoreOS and Red Hat CoreOS, with a strong focus on being managed as a resource within the Kubernetes cluster, by Colin Walters (@cgwalters).

Fifth, Your Architect Brain Needs to Understand How a Container Engine Works tackles the difficult subject of what exactly is happening inside a container engine, by me Scott McCarty (@fatherlinux)

Finally, Two Types of People, Those Who Understand Container Standards and Those That Don’t digs deeper into the container standard highlighting where your project can fit into the ecosystem, also by me.

There were tons of awesome talks, but I wanted to highlight a few from our container runtimes team at Red Hat. Hopefully you enjoy them, and feel free to follow some of these great engineers!
